19 Random Truths and 1 Lie

August 14, 2010

Care to play?

1.  When I was a little girl, I assigned gender to various things:  Cats (girls), dogs (boys), the moon (girl), the sun (boy), cars (girls), trucks (boys)…

2.  I was once invited to spend 6 months in the Chinese province of Guizhou, working with doctors to reduce stigma, and to develop a community volunteer program…at a ‘leper colony’.

3.  Despite coming from a very musically gifted family, I cannot carry a tune in a bucket.

4.  If I could drop everything, and go anywhere in the world right now, I would go to Paarl, South Africa.

5.  I’m afraid of parking garages.

6.  I’m a bit of a pervert.

7.  Alphonse Mucha is my favorite artist.

8.  When I was younger, I accidentally broke up my roommate’s band by making out his guitar/mandolin/viola player and causing a bunch of drama–earning myself the nickname, “Lips”.

9.  I’m a sympathetic crier.

10.  I abhor handguns, but am a pretty good shot.

11.  I once shattered my ankle while walking down the Las Vegas strip, making out with a complete stranger.

12.  I have a syphilis lunchbox.

13.  My favorite book is Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections.

14.  I’ve never seen The Terminator.

15.  I have no idea what happens to us when we die, but I really want to believe in reincarnation because it just makes sense to me that God would recycle.

16.  I think the desert is a magical place, but I’m not so sure people were meant to live there.

17.  Next month marks my 10 year ‘cancer-free’ mark.  According to my oncologist, my chance of reccurance at this point is less than 2%.  You bet your sweet ass we’re having a party to celebrate the closest thing to “cured” that I’m ever going to get.

18.  I’m a little bit obsessed with stripey knee socks.

19.  As much as I’d like to say that I’m completely over The Capt’n, there are times, late at night, when I’m in bed, and his arms aren’t around me, and his breath is not on the back of my neck…and I miss him, damn it.

2o.  I can keep a secret.

    4. My totem animal is the River Otter.

    5. I had a huge crush on LeVar Burton for most of my childhood – ever since “Roots” – and when I was a nanny, I’d make the kids watch Reading Rainbow so I could look at him some more.

    6. I have met James Herriott, in his hometown of Thirsk, Yorkshire, England, and found him to be very endearing and delightful.

    7. I have never seen any of the Godfather movies.

    13. So far, my 40’s are my best decade ever – in spite of the pain of losing my mom.

    14. I have one regret, that I allowed my daughter to live with a man that didn’t like her or appreciate her, for four years. But I don’t wish it never happend or that I hadn’t lived with him, because then we wouldn’t have had Pender Island or met so many of our good friends. So its confusing.

    15. I secretly love sappy love songs with corny lyrics.

Great list, Dylan. I love your crush on LeVar Burton. Heh. Watch a lot of Star Trek, the Next Generation?

So, shall I guess which one is your lie? And care to guess which one is mine?

      • August 14, 2010 12:18 PM

Star Trek: NG….I own the entire series now. LOL

Sure, go ahead and guess my lie. And yours is the last one I think.

      • August 14, 2010 1:27 PM

Nope! Number 2 is also, true! I didn’t end up going but I had the opportunity. Part of me regrets not going, what a great opportunity, right??? But it would have been a long, expensive trip (especially since the Clinic wouldn’t hold my job), and I couldn’t find anyone to watch the Ruby Dog for six months. And was told I couldn’t bring her because ‘spotted dog’ is considered ‘just right’ and she surely would have been eaten. Hrrrumph. There will be no eating the Ruby Dog.

        Try again!

HINT: My lie isn’t all that interesting.

        I’m going to go with…sky diving. That’s gotta be a lie–right? Heh.

    • August 14, 2010 12:29 PM

Ha! I can too, keep a secret! Nope. My lie is one of the others…;)

And yours is tricky! I’m going to go with…number 6? Because you would expect him to be endearing and delightful, based on his books…so, perhaps there’s irony here. Maybe he wasn’t such a delightful fellow? Tricky, tricky, Dylan–this is tough!

      • August 14, 2010 1:08 PM

Ha…ok. My second guess then – this is HARD – is #2 then.

And you’re wrong! I have met him and he IS just like he is in his books! :o) Try again!

      • August 14, 2010 1:54 PM

Nope. I have wanted to skydive.

Try again! Hint: Part of it is true, part of it is not.

        My next guess…#8?

      • August 14, 2010 2:50 PM

Boring lie….hm….I have no idea. I could guess all the rest, one by one. Since I’ve never heard of a syphillis lunch box I’ll say that one is the lie.

And #1 is true also. One more guess till we reveal?

Mary, I love reading your thoughts! They really do make me smile 🙂

    • August 14, 2010 12:02 PM

Thanks, Olimpia. They clutter up my brain, so every now and then I have to release them. 😉

  3. August 14, 2010 2:29 PM

    Okay, Dylan…my guess is #1!!!

And #8 is true. Embarrassingly, enough. Big early 20s romantic drama that happens when you date/make out within your circle of friends. His (at that point) ex found out that we were crushing on each other and threatened to kill herself, and they ended up getting back together and moving out-of-state–within a couple of weeks. Crazy, huh? The big joke was, “that must have been some kiss…”

Care to try again? Again, it’s a rather boring lie…

  4. August 14, 2010 3:03 PM

Okay, okay, I give…what’s your lie?

Mine’s #13. I felt like I was *suppose* to love the book because everyone and their mother recommended it to me, and it was up for a Pulitzer and a National Book Award but…I reeeeeeeeeally hated it. I wanted to kick its ass when I was done reading it. I’m not sure if it’s Jonathan Franzen’s “voice” or what, but I found it pretentious. I actually threw it across the room when I finished reading it. LOL

PS: I have a pic of my syphilis lunchbox in one of my Facebook albums. It was a birthday present from my friend Dooley. Heh. It’s metal and has vintage syphilis ‘posters’ on it. It’s pretty much awesome.

    • August 14, 2010 3:06 PM

Mine is #10. I have never been to Germany. The guy I made out with was from Liverpool and I met him in Wales. :oP

I’m gonna have to go look at your picture. And I’ve never heard of that book and now won’t bother. LOL

      • August 14, 2010 6:43 PM

Love it! Okay, I’ve changed my FB profile pic just for you…

    • August 14, 2010 6:42 PM

Ha! Voyeuring is great. Your turn for a list. 😉

PS: I should have picked a more interesting lie. Heh.

  8. August 15, 2010 11:32 PM

Woooooooooo! Thanks for playing, ladies. Great lists!

Now, Heather, I have no idea. I’m going to go with either #2 or #8? I think #5 is adorable. I really cannot sing well at all but love to, anyway. I would get shy around the Capt’n, though, and sing very quietly to myself. And #9? Me, too. Big time. Have you seen his dancing outtakes from “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”??? So flippin’ adorable.

Olimpia: You did make your lie too easy! For me, at least…hehe…which books are you reading, huh? Huh? Love your list, though. I think I knew all of these except #1, #19 and #20…
